Brorocco is unopposable in the six-runner three-year-old Maiden Stakes over ten furlongs of soft Doncaster today. Top-rated on official BHA ratings, best-in on my time-handicap and certain to be suited with extra distance because Andrew Balding’s charge is by Shirocco, prodigious sire of Champion Hurdle heroine, Annie Power!
This thrice-raced gelding looked a staying prospect under proficient stable jockey, David Probert, as a juvenile, running well twice at Sandown before disappointing somewhat, on a desperately soft Nottingham surface last October, one-hundred and eighty-one days ago.
That will be seized on by those keen to take Brorocco on but Balding is a realist and reports suggest lack of physical maturity contributed more than adverse ground conditions.
For what it’s worth, Brorocco could still beat this opposition based on any TH mark achieved, but both Four Mile Beach and Folly Beregere are forecast to be the front two favourites. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if that’s the starting price outcome.
Obviously, we’re loathe to get seriously involved with turf flat too soon, with so many all-weather fixtures offering tremendous winning prospects, but Brorocco is a grand sort, worth backing, and following.
As you’re probably aware Probe is a real favourite of this columnist and also partners stable-companion, Make Music, one of eight decs for a three-year-old Maiden Fillies’ Stakes over six furlongs; similar situation, thrown-in and definitely not one to oppose.
