Pre-tournament favourites Carenage Blasters and Gladiators will face off in tonight’s final of the WASA Table Tennis Club Invitational Team Tournament at WASA Sports and Cultural Club, St Joseph from 9pm.
This after both teams won their semifinal clashes at the same venue on Tuesday night by 4-2 margins.
Blasters led by two-time Caribbean Junior Champion and senior Caribbean bronze medal singles winner Aaron Wilson humbled Baggoo Himalaya Tough Guys 4-2.
But it was Tough Guys which got the perfect start when 65-year-old Canada-based David Mahabir, the T&T 2013 champion beat Alaric Humphreys 11-8, 11-3, 8-11, 11-3.
Wilson then got his team level with an 11-7, 8-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-5 defeat of Barbadian Mark Dowell while five-time T&T champion Reeza Burke won over Lionel Darceuil 11-3, 11-5, 14-12 for a 2-1 Blasters win on Table One.
On Table Two, Anil Ramlakhan alwon won the opener for Tough Guys 11-13, 11-7, 11-7, 11-7 against Zeke Huggins.
But Luc O’Young then outplayed Wesley Dookhoo 11-7, 11-7, 11-8 and Joshua Maxwell got the better of Vinoo Maraj 11-9, 8-11, 11-5, 5-11, 11-3 to seal victory.
Gladiators had a much easier path to its win as Guyana’s Joel Alleyne beat Franklyn Seechan 12-10, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7; his countryman Shemar Britton spanked Curtis Humphreys 11-5, 11-7, 11-7 and Aaron Edwards beat Kennethn Parmanand 9-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-8 all on Table One for a 3-0 cushion.
Twelve-time national women’s champion Aleena Edwards then brushed aside Ancil Russell 8-11, 11-6, 11-4, 11-9 for an unassailable lead while Riad Abasali won 9-11, 7-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-9 over Linda Partap-Boodhan and former national women’s champion, Brittany Joseph stopped Astra Edwards-Bennett12-10, 11-4, 11-5 for WASA’s lone wins. Prior to tonight’s final, the third place match takes place from 7pm.
