Summer Collection a cheap purchase out of Charles Hills’ Lambourn yard at Newmarket Sales last Autumn, could enhance her value considerably by winning the eight-runner ‘aged’ Maiden Stakes over twelve furlongs of Newcastle tapeta today; this well-bred Teofilio filly, now with Karl Burke, has already improved considerably, when racing over course and distance.
Although no match for Go George Go under stable apprentice, Jordan Vaughan, three weeks ago it isn’t surprising, the winner was completing a hat-trick and has gone on to supplement those gains with yet another success; trainer Alan Swinbank certainly took advantage of a lenient handicap mark.
To think Go George Go carried 19lbs less than Summer Collection, not allowing for an apprentice claim.
Burke had his card marked about Summer Collection and also knew he’d improve this filly; good business is all about getting hold of Hills’ rejects.
How much longer before ‘ordinary’ owners cotton on to the fact Charles simply isn’t ‘cutting it’ and is unlikely to survive more than two years, especially if Hamdan Al Maktoum withdraws support.
Hamdan is only keeping inmates at ‘Faringdon’ because Hills’ legendary father, Barry, 79, is monitoring progress; forty are due to arrive for 2017!
My play would be to issue positive instructions to Vaughan, ask him to set a strong pace off ‘bottom weight’ and, hopefully, let Summer Collection sort out the wheat from the chaff.
Obvious danger is 81-rated Henry Croft but my time-handicap indicates there is little difference; interesting, eh?
Mum’s The Word, switched from a difficult, quality, race yesterday, now looks a ‘penalty-kick’ for an ‘aged’ eight-runner Maiden Stakes over the straight mile; Richard Fahey has booked lightweight jockey Jonathan Haynes, at 8st 3lbs. Unopposable.
That also applies to Suzi’s Connoisseur, one of three ‘decs’ made by Newmarket trainer, Stuart Williams, for the 14-runner, £45000 ‘aged’ handicap over seven furlongs. Absolutely ‘thrown in’ and you can bet ‘they know!’
