InStyle is being done for a good cause—to raise funds for student scholarships and bursaries at The UWI St Augustine. The university will host a fund-raising fashion show featuring several of T&T’s leading fashion designers as they reveal their summer 2017 resort and ethnic-inspired collections.

Under the direction of Christopher Nathan of Coco Velvet International, the UWI event will take place on May 7 at the Lord Kitchener Auditorium, NAPA, Port-of-Spain. InStyle will attract designers including Pantar, Meiling, Neha Karina by Neha Dawar and CLD – Charu Lohan Dass, Heather Jones, Claudia Pegus and Ecliff Elie.

According to Christine Nanton, marketing and communications officer at the Media & eMarketing communications office, UWI, the show was organised in collaboration with Media 21, the fund-raising and alumni affairs unit under the Office of Institutional Advancement and Internationalisation (OIAI) and the Division of Student Services and Development of UWI, St Augustine.

“Some of our students face several financial challenges in spite of GATE funding and need further support to enable them to complete their course of study.  For example, they require additional funds to aid them with purchasing books, transport to get to campus, daily sustenance, shelter/lodging and other items they may be required to get over their time at UWI. Scholarships and bursaries make this possible,” Nanton said in a news release.

QIAI’S director, Sharan Singh, said: “The people and companies involved will all play significant roles in creating a most unique event for your enjoyment, but with the singular purpose of generating scholarships that will change the lives of some of our students in a most profound manner.”

Are there were any other fundraising initiatives to help students? Nanton said yes; these include the annual UWI Endowment Carnival Fete and a golf tournament. There are also individuals who commit to giving annual grants, she said.

Nanton said the immediate goal of the event was to fulfil its target of 30 scholarships valued at $5,000 each.

The InStyle fashion show will be an annual one, said Nanton.
