
Top T&T swimmer, USA-based Dylan Carter continued his build-up to the 17th FINA World Championships which will be held in Budapest and Balatonfüred, Hungary from July 14-30, 2017 with a triple silver swim at the three-day Irvine Novaquatics Speedo Grand Challenge meet in Irvine, California on the weekend.
On Sunday in his final event, Carter touched the wall in 49.62 seconds in the men’s 100m freestyle four-man final behind Russian rocket Vladimir Morozov who won in 49.47 with Carter’s University of Southern California team-mate Cristian Quintero, third in 49.86 followed by Zach Apple in 50.19.
As usual, Morozov surged to the fastest split at the halfway point, taking it out in 23.52 while Carter charged on the second 50, trying to run him down, but Morozov was able to hold on and complete the sprint sweep with the T&T swimmer slightly behind.
Earlier on in the morning heats, Morozov was also the fastest in 49.89 followed by Quintero (50.04), Carter (50.17), Justin Lynch (50.28) and Apple, (50.30), all under Olympic qualifying standard time.
When the competition splashed off on Friday, Carter and Quintero battled it out in the men’s 200 freestyle final.
In the end, the two international Olympians and Trojan teammates took the top two places in the final after they were separated by just a tenth, at the half-way point, with Quintero leading in 52.72.
He was able to extend his lead through the back-half, touching in one minute, 48.77 seconds while Carter followed in 1:49.12 with Auburn’s Apple (1:50.88) and Nova’s Justin Nguyen (1:52.22), third and fourth respectively.
Carter had topped the morning heats in 1:49.07 with Quintero (1:50.83), Nyuyen (1:51.66) and Apple (1:52.61), all US National Championship qualifications times.
And in his lone outing on Saturday, the men’s 100m butterfly, Carter raced home in 53.59 seconds for second spot behind Luis Martinez who clocked 52.85 while Jaurez Martinez, took bronze in 54.24 after Lynch who led from start to end was disqualified.
Martinez (L) was the top qualifier in the heats in 53.51 followed by Carter (53.87), Lynch (54.29) and Ramirez (J), in 54.54.
